Newton's Laws and me:
Newton’s first law states that a
force must be applied to change the state of an object. An object in motion
will remain in motion at a constant speed and velocity unless acted on by a
force. An object at rest will remain at rest until acted upon by a force. A
force must be applied to change the trajectory. I relate to this when I think
of how it is I bring myself to change my state of being. I sometimes use stress
to motivate be to change my state and become more productive with schoolwork.
Emotions feel like a force that is acting on me to get me to change my speed or
direction.
The second law states that acceleration
in directly proportional to the force applied to the object and inversely
proportional to the mass of the object. I relate to this when I think of how
much more difficult it is to get started on a large project versus a small
task. Or how much more force it takes to get a group of people to do an
activity together than to rally one or two people.
The third law states that every
action has an equal and opposite reaction. I keep this in mind as I move about
the world and interact with people and the environment, being mindful of the
impact of my actions, but also being aware of the reactions that I have to what
I encounter.
Our Energy Efficient Culture:
I don't think that our culture is energy efficient at all. We create so much waste, and power our devices using really inefficient methods of energy production that pollute our environment. We also waste so much energy by using inefficient modes of transportation and having people travel so far each day to go to work or school. Our commercial agriculture practices are incredibly energy inefficient, requiring so many inputs. I feel like the cultural messaging I receive in this society say use what you can, just because you can. Go ahead, wear a sweater in August, you can do that! We poisoned the water somewhere on this earth so you could; use or lose it!
Descartes:
I suppose if Descartes hadn't said what he did, someone else would have and we could criticize them for the coming centuries. Reductionism is spiritually dead. It's a great way of thinking if you don't really want to know how the universe works, but you want to feel in control. Reductionism validates inflation of the ego and is the basis for the fierce individualism that I believe leads Western society astray.
